July 2025

We can’t believe Tynwald day is already behind us and the year is zipping past so quickly!  Thanks to all who joined us last month for the screening of 'the Brutalist' at the Erin Arts Centre. The film certainly had impact(!) and it definitely got our collaboration with Erin Arts Centre going in dramatic fashion!

We have quite a few items on this newsletter, so please do stick with it to the end, starting with two SofA events:

 Volunteer Lime Pointing

Join us on Saturday 26th July for some ‘hands-on' Hot Lime Pointing from 10am to 4pm at Rollage-ny-Twoaie, the tholtan on the Sloc Road.

This event is open to everyone and you’re free to come along for all or part of the day, as long as you like, to learn about this traditional building material and technique. We will start the day with an introduction by Manx National Heritage’s Conservation Architect, John-Paul Walker. He will explain the background and application of the materials and give a short demonstration, then we can all have a go on the stone walls of the house!

We have an eventbrite page for this event so please do register your interest and let us know when you’re likely to come along over that weekend.

You’ll be welcome any time between 10.00 - 16.00 on Saturday 26th and also on Sunday 27th July if you’d like to continue.  We will provide directions to the house, once you have registered.

Please do come along if you’re at all interested and might like to have a go! Katie has promised lashings of tea and cake!

This is an informal, volunteer-led event taking place on a live self-build construction site. As such this activity is not covered by our insurance policy.

Please bring and wear your own suitable PPE, including, sturdy boots, hard hat, protective gloves, safety goggles. Please also bring a good helping of common sense, the site may be uneven, tools and materials will be in use, and the lime mortar can be caustic.

SofA CPD

Join us on Tuesday 5th August for an RIBA-approved CPD from 10am at Santander Work Cafe Market Hall Basement Boardroom

Presented by Proctor Group the CPD covers Pitched Roof Design Considerations: Energy, Moisture & Air Permeability.

This CPD will give an overview of pitched roof design considerations and UK regulations, along with discussing the type of construction membranes used as pitched roof underlays and the effect their performance has on design. It also discusses the implications of hygrothermal-focussed roof design on the overall building energy performance.

All for free, grab yourself a NOA coffee on the way in and one of their amazing pain-au-chocolat… there’s no better way to keep on top of your CPD requirement!

And here are some events being hosted elsewhere that we think you might be interested in showing your support for:

Ramsey Stories

From 21st July to 14th August (closed Sundays and public holidays), join this Interactive Exhibition at the Ramsey Town Hall.

This exhibition in Ramsey invites the public to share stories, memories, and ideas about local places, helping to shape a future for the town that builds on what people value most.

Organised by the Ramsey & Northern Regeneration Steering Group, the Northern Chamber of Commerce, and the Cabinet Office, the project explores how regeneration can reflect community identity while supporting thoughtful change.

Paint Erin!

Join Paint Erin on 16 August 2025 for a Community Art Day in the yard behind the railway station next to Kerroo Brewery.

Port Erin will host a one-day participatory art event that brings together placemaking, tactical urbanism, and community-led design. Led by urban designer Betty Laurincova and the Keird Collective, the project invites residents to help transform the space behind the Railway Station with bold, nature-inspired asphalt painting.

Everyone’s welcome – no experience needed. Funded by the Isle of Man Arts Council. For more info and updates, follow the Facebook event page.

Hope that’s whetted your appetite! As ever, if you’ve any queries or would like any further information, please just email us back!
